Why did you start umpiring?
Simple; love of the game – even when I got too old to continue playing!

Who has given you the most help in your career?
Everyone I’ve stood with has helped in some measure, but I have to mention the people who were with me at the start; Joe Stoupe at Counties Manukau, Kevin Earl at Northern Districts and Tony Hill, whose cricketing roots are similar to mine.

Describe memories from your first NZC appointment.
Gillette Cup at Lincoln. Shared the week with a great bunch of colleagues and learned a huge amount in a short space of time. And had an absolute ball at the same time!

Which is your favourite cricket ground to umpire at and why?
Hard to separate Seddon Park, Hamilton – a place full of great memories; or The Basin Reserve – the home of cricket in New Zealand.

What's the strangest thing you've seen happen on field
A fielder threw the ball into his own hat! If he tried a hundred times to do it again I bet he couldn’t. Closely followed by suspending play due to smoke filling the ground from a neighbouring house fire.

Greatest cricket moment you've seen on field?
As a spectator, the birth of the Hadlee chant at Eden Park, 1977. As an umpire, there are too many moments to choose from, but the passion and emotion from both teams when Nelson lifted the Hawke Cup from Southland in 2018/2019 was great to be a part of.

If you could invent a new law or playing condition, what would it be?
A front-foot No-Ball would bring 10 runs and 2 free hits in all forms of cricket.

Why should people get involved in umpiring?
As cliché as it sounds, it really is the best seat in the house. You need to have a passion for the game, as it’s often hard-going out there, but the good outweighs the bad.

What advice would you give to aspiring umpires?
Listen to people who have been-there-done-that. Forget about getting all the decisions right – it simply will not happen. Be official, not officious Have FUN!
